In commemoration of World Environment Day, the EcoSmart Club has unveiled a nationwide initiative to mobilise secondary school students in tackling environmental challenges through recycling, waste management, sustainability advocacy, and other eco-friendly projects.
The programme, tagged National School Climate Action Week, will run from June 1 to 6, 2026, engaging schools across Nigeria in hands-on climate projects designed to move environmental engagement beyond awareness campaigns into practical action.
Preparing Young Nigerians for Climate Leadership
Founder of EcoSmart Club, Hannah Omokhaye, explained that the initiative is aimed at preparing young Nigerians to become environmentally conscious citizens and future leaders.
“The National School Climate Action Week was created to move climate engagement beyond awareness and into practical action,” Omokhaye said.
Participating schools will implement eco-friendly projects within their communities and document their activities through photographs and short videos. Submissions will be featured in daily “School Spotlights”, showcasing innovative student-led solutions to environmental problems.
Shaping Lifelong Values
Project Manager Temidayo Arewa noted that the focus on secondary school students was deliberate, as they are at a formative stage where lifelong values and habits can be shaped.
“Sparking their interests in climate action will have long-lasting ripple effects on environmental sustainability in Nigeria,” Arewa said.
Storytelling and Impact Tracking
EcoSmart emphasised that storytelling will remain central to the campaign, with students’ experiences and solutions amplified online to inspire similar projects in other schools and communities.
At the end of the programme, organisers will release a report detailing participation metrics, key outcomes, and lessons learned. Schools will receive certificates of participation, while selected projects will enjoy continued visibility through follow-up features and impact tracking.
Call for Participation
EcoSmart Club has urged secondary schools nationwide to register for the initiative via its online platform, stressing that the campaign is designed to foster collaboration, creativity, and practical climate solutions among Nigeria’s youth.
