Tinubu Launches 500,000-Unit Mega City to Decongest Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to break ground on a massive 500,000 housing unit “Renewed Hope Mega City” along the Abuja–Nasarawa growth corridor. The initiative, unveiled by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is being described as one of the most ambitious urban development projects in Nigeria’s history.

According to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the project site at Aso-B in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has already been inspected, with preparations underway for construction. Dangiwa emphasized that the mega city is designed to reshape housing delivery, decongest Abuja, and unlock new economic opportunities for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Strategic Urban Growth

The Renewed Hope Mega City is expected to redefine the Abuja urban growth corridor by creating a modern, master-planned community that integrates housing, infrastructure, and commercial hubs. Officials say the project will not only ease pressure on Abuja’s overstretched housing market but also stimulate job creation and attract private investment.

Economic and Social Impact

Analysts believe the mega city could serve as a model for future urban development in Nigeria, addressing the twin challenges of rapid population growth and inadequate housing. By situating the project along the Abuja–Nasarawa corridor, the government aims to expand the capital’s metropolitan reach while reducing congestion in the city center.

The initiative is also seen as a cornerstone of Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure, housing, and economic reforms.

Public Reactions

While the announcement has been met with optimism, some observers caution that execution will be key. Past housing projects in Nigeria have struggled with funding, transparency, and delivery timelines. Stakeholders are urging the government to ensure accountability and effective partnerships with the private sector to avoid delays.
