Chidimma Adetshina

Chidimma Adetshina holds the prestigious titles of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and Miss Universe Africa and Oceania 2024. She made history by becoming the first Nigerian to secure the first runner-up spot at the Miss Universe pageant. Her remarkable achievement at the 73rd edition of the global beauty contest, held in Mexico City, Mexico, goes beyond a simple ranking—it symbolizes triumph over adversity.

Born in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, Adetshina’s path to the Miss Universe stage was filled with challenges and controversy. Initially competing for Miss Universe South Africa 2024, she faced xenophobic abuse and questions about her nationality, which forced her to withdraw. The situation intensified when South African authorities began investigating her mother’s citizenship status. Despite these hurdles, she turned adversity into opportunity by accepting an invitation to represent Nigeria, her father’s homeland.

At just 23 years old and still pursuing a law degree, Adetshina’s stellar performance at Miss Universe—where she was also named Miss Universe Africa and Oceania—marks the highest placement for an African contestant since South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi won the title in 2019. Her accomplishment follows in the footsteps of Agbani Darego, who became the first Nigerian to reach the top 10 semifinals in 2001.

Beyond her success in pageantry, Adetshina has become a powerful advocate for cultural diversity and resilience. She openly shared how the xenophobic backlash affected her mental health, striking a chord with many who have faced similar struggles. Yet, she remained steadfast, stating, “This achievement is not just mine, it’s for Nigeria, it’s for Africa.”

Adetshina’s success not only raises Nigeria’s profile on the world stage but also challenges traditional views on identity and belonging. In a country often divided by ethnic differences, the widespread support she received from Nigerians of all backgrounds highlights the unifying power of shared accomplishments. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when Nigerians come together as one. Two days after the pageant in Mexico, Adetshina announced her retirement from the beauty pageant scene and her plans to move to Nigeria after completing her one-year reign—an announcement met with overwhelming support.
